The decision of the Berlin police to prohibit the display of the flag of Ukraine on May 9— this is a slap in the face for Ukraine and its citizens, Ukrainian Ambassador to Germany Andriy Melnyk said in an interview with the German editorial network RND.

“We are shocked that the Berlin police banned flags associated with Ukraine on May 8 and 9. <…> This is a slap in the face of Ukraine and a slap in the face of the Ukrainian people,»,— he said.

The ambassador called the Berlin police ban tactless, and the decision itself— political.

After the interview, Melnik tweeted asking the Berlin authorities to lift the restriction.

In addition to the Ukrainian flag, the Berlin police banned the public display of the Russian flag and St. George ribbons during the period from May 8 to 9 at events dedicated to the celebration of the 77th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe. Local authorities explained the restriction as a desire to prevent provocations and further escalation of the conflict. Everyone, except veterans of the Second World War, was forbidden to wear military uniforms during these two days.

The authorities of France and Austria began to invite Russian representatives to the ceremonies dedicated to the end of World War II in 2022. Ambassador to Paris Alexei Meshkov said that they were always present at the commemorative ceremonies, and drew attention to the attendance at the event by representatives of countries that fought on the side of Nazi Germany. In turn, Russian Ambassador to Austria Dmitry Lyubinsky stressed that the authorities of this country do not understand the significance of the terrible lessons of history and their consequences, and pointed out the negative consequences of this step for bilateral relations.
